An electric concept based on an energetic rhythm section, with a strong reference to improvised music, both in range of timbre and freedom of language.
Next first performed in October 2006 in Minneapolis, where the composer and improviser François Corneloup spotted the most creative musicians on today’s improvised music scene in the US and asked them to join him. JT Bates (Fat Kids Wednesday) is a drummer with a solid groove with the versatility to go beyond the role of mere timekeeper and interact fully in the collective improvisation. Dean Magraw brings the energy of the electric guitar and Chico Huff (Jeff Lee Johnson) bolsters the project’s rhythmic platform with taut, disciplined bass lines. In the role of soloist, violinist Dominique Pifarély contributes his rapid, inspired input to the flow of improvisation, using to full advantage his background as a jazz musician and the experience acquired from experimenting in sound and composition. In this company, François Corneloup is pursuing the path of melody that has been his for years.
Duo Dean Magraw / François Corneloup
Dean Magraw (guitar),
François CORNELOUP (saxophones)
The two musicians offer a repertory of songs in the untroubled simplicity of acoustic performance, moving seamlessly between the most penetrating tunes and natural improvisation. Their set is all about melodies, by Dean Magraw, François Corneloup, and others. Sincerely and simply shared and revealed in that most intimate of orchestras, the duo.
